Our Story 'Back Then'

From a post-war house-furnishing business on Cookson Street in Blackpool, then to Lytham in 1956 with the help of the Clifton family, to today’s specialist carpet and flooring showroom in Wrea Green, explore more than 75 years of Mountain & Cowell Flooring history.

1950 — Founded in Blackpool

Mountain & Cowell was established by Herbert Mountain and Joseph Robert Cowell on Cookson Street, supplying furniture, carpets and home furnishings across the Fylde Coast.

1956 — Incorporated

Mountain and Cowell Limited was formally incorporated in July 1956.

Moving to 14 Market Square, Lytham, where it became a well-known local showroom. Family rumours suggests the building was acquired from Harry Clifton.

1960s–2000s — A Trusted Local Name

Mountain & Cowell developed from a house furnisher into a specialist carpet and flooring business serving generations of local customers around Lancashire.

2015 — A New Generation

Jack Haworth acquired the business from Philip Murphy, grandson of founder Joseph Cowell, continuing the Mountain & Cowell name.

Today — Flooring from Wrea Green

Now based in Wrea Green, Mountain & Cowell supplies carpets, vinyl, LVT, wood and natural flooring across Lancashire, combining traditional service with modern flooring expertise.

Mountain & Cowell is an independent carpet and flooring business with more than 75 years of history across Blackpool, Lytham and the Fylde Coast.

Founded in 1950 by Herbert Mountain and Joseph Robert Cowell, the business began as a traditional house furnisher on Cookson Street in Blackpool before moving to its long-established showroom in Lytham Market Square.

Today, Mountain & Cowell Flooring supplies premium carpets, natural flooring, vinyl, luxury vinyl tiles and wood flooring for domestic and commercial properties across Lancashire.

From product selection and home surveys to subfloor preparation and final installation, every flooring project is carefully planned and professionally managed.

Now based at our streamlined Wrea Green showroom, we continue to combine traditional customer service with modern flooring expertise, competitive pricing and specialist fitting.
